My grandfather, Thomas Hayes, grew up in Brooklyn on Ocean Avenue, across from his grandfather’s family-owned hotel and bar (running from 1890-1961). I went to the Brooklyn Municipal Archives recently to look at photos of both his home and the roadhouse, and also found a lot map of the area from the 1940s. I used letterpress to create the face of this clock; the textured background is the map of the neighborhood while the type and design were inspired by the huge original clock that used to occupy the bar.
